go to the hospital - research2

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

Today I went to the hospital with my group to do research. I think I saw some new information in this field research, which was different from what was in the school brief.

By looking at the current artwork in the hospital, I have recorded the themes that interest me, which are paintings about plants, collages, weaving and the design of hospital spaces. I think the style of most of the work in the hospital is abstract. For example, overall very large blocks of colour on canvas, or printed lines with a sense of frame. Also, by looking at the historical plaques of subscribers and nursing, I learnt that the hospital is very proud of Edinburgh from the different perspectives of people contributing and sharing about the hospital. The history of this hospital is the most precious value of the hospital.

Research process

PLACE: Hospital - Floors 1-3

Our group visited the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh together. I recorded some of the artworks of interest. At the same time, I listed some ideas on my mobile phone.

For example.

1. How often do the artworks on the walls in the hospital get changed?

2. How much attention they give to the artworks when people visit the hospital.

3. I have noticed that there are more elderly people coming to the hospital.

Artworks of interest

-1

Elspeth Lamb

Vortex

I really like the colours in this painting, it suits a setting like a hospital.

-2

This woven piece is rich in colour. The patterns are neatly arranged in a 'copy form'. I feel a sense of order in the picture. Perhaps as a patient this would give me a sense of calm. At the same time, the text above is interesting, I think, as if to suggest to the patient: "Everything will be fine." It's a positive hint.

-3

With this painting of plants, I think he brings people closer to nature in this hospital space.

-4

These two works use the body to explore the personality and emotions of the figures. The artist has emphasised the presence of the wood grain in his work. I felt a 'real meaning' in the images.

-5

I noticed that a lot of wooden facilities were used in the hospital. In the detailing, some of the signs in the spaces are made of wood. This form helps to bring a 'homely feel'. The public areas of the hospital are also well lit, with spacious glazing that helps to adjust the angle of natural light. If the weather is good, this allows the space to be filled with sunlight. This is a relaxing environment for patients, doctors and other hospital staff.

-6

Such a daylight-filled outdoor space and green surroundings help to build a peaceful atmosphere.

-7

The application of lights in different scenes in the hospital has a different feel.

PLACE: Hospital Reception

Finally, we waited until the staff were not busy. Then I had a short conversation with them. I wanted to find out more about the hospital. They introduced a member of staff. He showed us some more history and works on the walls of the hospital. During this time I also asked if there were any brochures related to the hospital.

(It was a real pleasure to chat with this enthusiastic gentleman.)

The above is a general description of the process of today's research. But I haven't finished compiling all my information yet. I will continue tomorrow!
